Hello Dear One!
Have you ever thought to use exercise to help in the effort to lose weight?
GOOD!
As it can totally speed up your results.
When you have, do you typically think, "faster/harder = better"?
If so you are probably WRONG.
Intensity CAN aid in our efforts, but strategy with that is CRUCIAL.
A super simple way to ensure you are losing weight as comfortably and quickly as possible is to make sure you're keeping your heart rate in a FAT BURNING ZONE.
What is that?
Your Fat Burning Zone is between 60%-70% of your maximum heart rate.
When we are in it we will sweat a bit, can easily carry on a conversation, and can do said cardiovascular exercise for AGES.
Why isn't our maximum heart rate, or closer to it, more effective in losing weight?
When the body ask for fuel slowly it easily pulls from fat.
When we ask for fuel FAST the body will automatically want to pull from sugar.
This is NATURAL and how we are ALL wired.
When you're in a Fat Burning mode you can hang in there for longer when the tempo of your movements are quick or when you're clearly exerting yourself, but there will be a breaking point for us as well.
And the deal is, if weight loss IS our goal - it will serve us best to keep the bulk of our exercise in a Fat Burning Zone.
FAT BURNING ZONE FORMULA
220 - your age = ___
___ x .6 = ___ (low end of your heart rate zone)
___ x .7 = ___ (high end of your heart rate zone)
The trick is to simply keep your heart rate between those two numbers.
LEt's do me!
220 - 46 = 174
174 x .6 = 104.4 BPM
174 x .7 = 121.8 BPM
So I aim to stay between these two numbers AND I also aim to stay on the higher end (more bang for my buck).
So while high intensity intervals and generally cardiovascularly taxing workouts can HELP with weight loss - steady state cardio done at a higher clip than being in your fat burning zone CAN be problematic.
When we keep asking for fuel quickly for TOO LONG our body can revert to breaking muscle down as it desperately tries to mine for sugar.
Plus the body will typically jack up our hunger as a result of our workout = AGAINST THE EFFORT.
