I thought to share this blogpost as I was asked to write it for a new networking friend's audience who owns a clothing company for babies who's garments are made out of 100% organic cotton that are soft, safe, and sustainable.  

 

She chose to start this company when she had her daughter who had allergic reactions to cotton grown with pesticides, dyes that were full of chemicals, and textures that were scratchy and abrasive for her newborn's skin.

So...dropping the baby weight.

 

Truth be told I've worked with many newish mom's but the big thing with weight loss and new moms is whether you're breast feeding or not.

 

If you are = KEEP GOING!

 

Average breast feeding moms burn an extra 500 - 700 calories a day to feed their babies.

 

If you want a total win win scenario for your baby's health, bonding, and your own weight loss BREAST FEED!

 

AND if you're breast feeding but NOT losing weight - still don't do anything different.

 

Calorie restriction isn't useful when we're pregnant OR breastfeeding.

 

So make sure you're DONE with breast feeding as some weight loss tactics can end up in a mother's milk drying up.

 

All fine if that's what you want.  Otherwise, HOLD please.

BUT if you're DONE with breast feeding and you're wishing to lose weight here are some useful things to consider.

FOOD FACTS

 

To support our waistline there are two main food camps.

 

1. Higher carb, lower fat, higher fiber, moderate/high protein.

 

Or

 

2. Higher fat, lower carb, higher fiber (for the carbs we are eating), moderate/high protein.

 

Either one can work for weight loss (one ultimately works better in my opinion), but the important part is we stick mostly to one camp over the other.

 

Protein is not a good source of fuel.

 

Carbs are an easy source but can leave us quickly..

 

Fats will help us get full and stay full - but that works best when we're ALREADY burning fat (see where you are on the sugar vs fat burning spectrum).

 

a) BUFFERING BLOOD SUGAR:

 

If you are eating more carbs simply make sure to buffer them at the time of consumption.

 

Fat, fiber, protein, or an acid (vinegar, lemon/lime juice) will do that.

 

Make sure you have one of those substances with/before you ingest carbs.

 

This will help you to not have as much insulin released when you do eat.

 

Insulin stores fat and BLOCKS fat from being used for fuel.

b) CRAVINGS CURBED

 

A really useful way to help reduce cravings is by helping to have your blood sugar rise and fall less often, and a way to do that is to eat LESS OFTEN.

 

Even eating three times vs five or six will be an assist.

 

You don't need to eat less food overall, you just need to have food less frequently.

 

 

c) CALORIES COUNT

 

If you feel like you're doing everything right with this, but you're still not experiencing the change you expect - start tracking.

 

You might be surprised with what you find (in either direction!).

 

MyFitnessPal is probably the most loved/use food tracking app I know of.

 

Plus you can always step away once you have a sense of what a typical meal for you looks like/weighs in at.

WALK IT OFF

 

Unless you WANT to get back into weights asap or love HIIT workouts, start/stay walking.

 

Walking is such a great fat loss form of exercise because it asks for fuel slowly which means it reliably pulls from fat.

 

When we ask for fuel quickly our body wants to pull from sugar (fast fuel), which can be fine - but perhaps not the mode we wish to reinforce when wanting to lose weight.

 

So whether it's with a stroller with your baby, with the dog, on your walking pad, outside or at the gym - WALK IT OFF.

 

Your sanity and waistline will thank you.

 

 

MOVE AFTER YOUR MEAL

 

This is newer info for me, but advice that is USEFUL.

 

Walking shortly after eating can have a great impact on your waistline and the scale.

 

But SQUATS done after you eat can improve blood sugar levels even MORE dramatically.

 

It sounds like 10 squats done 45 min after eating can have a larger reduction in blood sugar than walking for 30 min(??).  

 

This sound almost impossible, but the blood sugar clearing ability of our large quads seem to dominate in this capacity.

 

Less time, more impact?

 

YES PLEASE!

 

  

I have a LOT more to say on this matter, AND I also recognize that BUSY MOMS don't need more stuff to do or to feel that they're not doing enough.

 

You are.

 

You both GREW and BIRTHED a baby, and now you are caring for this small human.

 

You're doing more than most and more than most are capable of doing.

 

So celebrate the body that has performed miracles and continues to do so.
